India's girls finally created history after a long wait of 47 years. India Women defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final of the One-Day World Cup in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. With this, Team India also became the world champion in women's cricket.
South Africa elected to bowl at the DY Patil Stadium. India scored 298 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Shafali Verma scored 87, Deepti Sharma 58, Smriti Mandhana 45 and Richa Ghosh scored 34 runs. Aibonga Khaka took 3 wickets for South Africa.
South Africa were bowled out for 246 runs in front of a big target. Captain Laura Wolvaart scored a century but could not lead the team to victory. Deepti Sharma took the most wickets from India with 5 wickets.
The Women's One-Day World Cup was started 52 years ago in 1973. India did not participate then. 47 years ago, in 1978, India Women participated in this tournament for the first time under the captaincy of Diana Edulji.

In 2005, Team India reached the final for the first time, but lost to Australia. In 2017, India entered the final by defeating Australia in the semi-finals, but was defeated by England in the final. In 2025, the team once again defeated Australia in the semi-finals, but this time won the trophy by defeating South Africa in the final.
